The author poses a question about why were are sometimes “on” and at other times not on, when leading our business – including Sidelines. When we’re off its common to ask what ingredient or quality is missing at the moment that prevents us from excelling in our leadership roles.
He refers to a fundamental state of leadership to describe how we respond in a leadership crisis situation. He suggests that more effective leaders will depend on their basic core values to guide them through, which is often not their normal way of handling everyday issues. For example an effective Sideline leader would instinctively resort to doing what is believed right when being tested, not necessarily what makes the most sense from a financial or marketing perspective.
